Bakti Pangan Lestari
The Bakti Pangan Lestari program is an innovative solution from the Bakti Barito Foundation to address the critical challenges of limited land availability, scarce resources, and the looming threat of climate change. As Indonesia’s population is projected to reach 318 million by the year 2045, we are deeply committed to helping smallholder farmers and their families build climate resilience and strengthen national food security.
At the core of this program is the implementation of the Integrated Farming system, which is driven by a simple yet powerful philosophy: “Plant what we eat, eat what we plant.” By thoughtfully integrating various agricultural elements—such as crops, fisheries, and livestock—this system ensures that farmers can generate daily, weekly, monthly, and annual income streams. This approach not only elevates economic well-being but also fosters food independence, scaling from the household level all the way to national sovereignty.

Cultivating the Next Generation of Farmers
To ensure long-term sustainability, we firmly believe that the youth are the true foundation of our future food systems. Recognizing that young farmers (ages 20-39) made up only 8% of Indonesia’s total farming population in 2019, Bakti Barito initiated a specialized vocational education initiative.
We designed and produced the Integrated Farming Business (Usaha Pertanian Terpadu/UPT) curriculum to equip teachers and students with critical climate adaptation skills and integrated farming (permaculture) techniques. This curriculum has been officially approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). Marking a historic milestone, SMK Negeri 2 Sukoharjo became the first vocational high school in Indonesia to officially open the Integrated Farming Business Expertise Program for the 2023/2024 academic year.
2023 Indonesia’s SDG Action Award
Our dedication to building sustainable food systems has garnered national recognition. On November 10, 2023, the Ministry of National Development Planning awarded the Bakti Barito Foundation the third-place winner of the 2023 Indonesia’s SDG Action Award in the Philanthropy category.
This prestigious award recognized the Bakti Pangan Lestari program for its significant educational approach, which actively helps smallholder farmers build climate resilience and food security. The program is acknowledged as a direct catalyst driving progress toward SDG Target 2: Zero Hunger.
Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Food independence proves its vital importance during times of crisis. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck and heavily disrupted economic stability across various sectors, the farmers fostered by Bakti Barito demonstrated remarkable resilience. Our assisted rubber farmers were able to reliably meet their families’ daily food needs by depending on the yields from the integrated farming systems they had developed right in their own backyards.
