SAGARA: Innovation Prevents Waste Leaking Into the Sea

The SAGARA program prevents waste leakage into the sea by empowering coastal communities in Anyer Village to implement onshore waste management practices based on circular economy concepts.

Through education efforts and assistance by the SAGARA program, the Community Self-Help Group (KSM) established a Waste Bank and Temporary Waste Shelter to manage waste in Anyar Village, which was previously underserved by waste transportation facilities.

Both high-value plastic waste, such as PET bottles, HDPE containers, and other plastics, and low-value plastic waste are sent to IPST ASARI, an integrated waste management center initiated by the Chandra Asri Group.

At IPST ASARI, high-value plastic waste is sold directly to recycling centers, while low-value plastic waste is transformed into pyrolysis oil (under Chandra Asri’s brand PLUSRI®). This pyrolysis oil, which serves as an alternative fuel akin to diesel, kerosene, and gasoline, is then redistributed for reuse within the community and by fishermen—thereby closing the loop.
