Kitabisa.org and Bakti Barito Target Social Investment of Rp 13 Billion in a Blended Finance Partnership for Climate Education

Kitabisa.org and Bakti Barito today announced a collaboration to establish an endowment fund with a target of generating a total social investment of over Rp 13 billion to support climate education and expand the “Green Guardians” program. Green Guardians is a holistic climate education program, initiated by Bakti Barito, designed to equip the younger generation with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to mitigate and adapt to climate change through environmental awareness.

To strengthen these efforts, Bakti Barito will match every public donation, while Kitabisa.org will also provide additional funding. Together, they aim to build tangible support for climate change education in Indonesian schools through Kitabisa.org’s digital reach and Bakti Barito’s measurable methodology.

“Over the next five years, we will double the reach of our funds for the implementation of the Green Guardians program through matching public donations and strategic reinvestment,” said Alfatih Timur, Head of Kitabisa. “By leveraging the Productive Waqf (endowment) model, we ensure that every rupiah works harder. This blended finance structure creates a sustainable funding ecosystem that will support climate education for years to come.”

“Bakti Barito has supported the Adiwiyata Program through the Green Guardians program because it is an excellent government program that has delivered real impact for schools in building environmental awareness,” said Dian A. Purbasari, Director of Bakti Barito. “We are proud to partner with Kitabisa.org in the establishment of this endowment fund, which represents a first-of-its-kind blended financing innovation in climate change education for the next generation. We view the Green Guardians program as a collaborative effort, and we actively invite other companies and philanthropic organizations to join us in expanding this partnership to reach more students nationwide.”

Bakti Barito and Kitabisa.org are opening the door for collaboration to all parties intending to achieve collective progress in environmental education as extensively as possible through three main activities:

  • Teacher Capacity Building: Focusing on topics of climate change and the conservation of energy, water, and biodiversity.
  • Tailored Mentoring Support: Assisting each school to achieve the Adiwiyata Award (National Green School Award). This mentoring aims to strengthen the role of Adiwiyata cadres as agents of environmental change in schools. These cadres will be directly involved in practical activities related to climate education and waste management, such as single-use plastic reduction campaigns and the application of 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) principles. Through this participatory approach, students not only understand environmental issues theoretically but are also able to make a tangible contribution to creating cleaner, greener, and more sustainable schools.
  • Infrastructure Support: Providing facilities to help achieve clean, healthy, and sustainable schools that are prepared to face climate change.

Welcoming this initiative, Dra Jo Kumala Dewi, Expert on Fostering Environmentally Conscious Behavior and Community Development representing the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency, stated: “We highly appreciate this innovative collaboration as it aligns with the ministry’s efforts to accelerate the achievement of Adiwiyata schools and shape an Indonesian youth that is resilient to the climate crisis.”

This innovative funding structure is designed to optimize impact and guarantee the continuation of the program in the future. As much as 70 percent of the annual budget will be allocated directly to program implementation in 222 schools striving for Adiwiyata school status over the next five years. Meanwhile, the remaining 30 percent will be channeled into a Productive Waqf endowment fund specifically designated for the sustainability of the Green Guardians program and the development of future Adiwiyata cadres.

Through this innovative public-private partnership, Kitabisa.org and Bakti Barito are optimistic about creating a blended finance model that can be scaled for philanthropy, corporations, and public engagement. By opening the Green Guardians program to more partners, this collaboration ensures that increasingly more Indonesian students will be academically and practically prepared to face the global climate crisis.
